More on Underground Restaurants
June 21st, 2009I recently posted about the concept of Hidden Restaurants and asked for information about anyone’s knowledge of these happening in Australia. It just so happens I’m about 2 years behind the 8 ball, Ed investigated the existence of Zingara Cucina (a restaurant with a similar premise) and concluded that it didn’t exist. The Age has covered invitation-only dinner parties run by existing restauranteurs and providors – hardly underground, but hush-hush and interesting nonetheless.
All of this brings me full circle, the Global Gobbler definitely does host underground dinner parties and Table for 20 seems to do something very similar in Sydney. Furthermore there seems to be a speakeasy style members-only bar operating in Bondi by the name of White Revolver.

There’s a hidden bar in Manhattan that is frequented only by those fortunate enough to be given the phone number. From the outside it is nothing but a red door in an otherwise suburban street in the lower east side. But a well-timed phonecall and a wait on the sidewalk and you’re ushered inside, though a velvet curtain and into a small, comfortable, and nicely lit bar. Miles Davis provided ample muscial back up and the drink de noir was a ginger, mint and spirit mix that went down very smoothly…

Yeah, righo Jameses. Do the cool people always feel obliged to let you know when something is going down?
