Hidden Restaurants in Melbourne, Australia
Tweet Follow @MyAchingHeadA recent article in the New York Times talks about the recent phenomenon of hidden restaurants in Berlin. These are often small underground restaurants that are either invite only or not advertised, hidden through unmarked doors and courtyards. Often people whisper about the existence of speakeasy bars in Melbourne which I can’t confirm or deny, although a good majority of our bars aren’t particularly conspicuos. Aside from these pseudo hidden venues, we do however have one “hidden restaurant” that I know of. This belongs to the Global Gobbler. He cooks themed meals for random people who have discovered him through his website. I haven’t been to one of the meals, but I’m told he does a great job and a good time is all but guaranteed.
Does anyone know of any other hidden restaurants in Australia?
Update: A Hidden Pizza Restaurant in Fitzroy is opening next week. How underground it actually is remains to be seen.

There’s Table For 20 in Sydney (www.tablefor20.blogspot.com), which I have yet to go to — but it’s based on the guerrilla-dining concept. I’d love to go!

Hi guys.. I am wondering what you would expect from one of these hidden restaurants? Number of courses? Set menu? Price you would be prepared to pay..Or maybe just pay what you think it’s worth.. Etc.. What kind of environment would you expect.. Five star.. Would the food need to be cutting edge.. Or would good honest food be the best for you. Would you enjoy a theme?? Etc etc. Any feedback would be appreciated..
I know I am sick of going out and being disappointed by ordinary food and having to pay large sums of money for it. If you do respond and live In Melb then leave some contact details… You never know when an invite might turn up….

I agree. There are too many eating places in Melbourne with pretentious style of service, prices that are too high compared to the quality of the food, etc.etc… So, invite me!

Leave me a little feedback from some of my questions if you would be so kind ( point form is fine) and as soon as I’m ready I will have you at the top of the list.(as you responded first!!!!)
From what I have seen and heard about most of the people doing this just do what they do best.. Then some try and copy the innovators Which to be quite honest doesnt appeal to me.. my feeling as a chef of some 15+ years of cooking is that you do what you do well and it is well received but I am still keen to get the mood of the meeting!
Cheers.
